Robert Hopson

Robert Hopson joined the WVU faculty in 2002. Dr. Hopson received a Ph.D. in art History from the School of Art and Art History at the University of Iowa where he specialized in French art of the 18th and 19th centuries. Additional areas of emphasis included European art of 18th and 19th centuries, European art theory criticism of the 18th and 19th centuries, and American art and history of the 18th and 19th centuries. Incorporating broad-ranging interests, his dissertation examines the late portraits of Berthe Morisot in the context of emerging aesthetic, cultural, and scientific ideas of the period.
Dr. Hopson has presented papers and lectures on a variety of topics and issues engaging his interests and expertise at several museums and at regional and international symposia including the International Mallarmé Symposium, SECAC, and the Midwest Art History Society. Currently, Dr. Hopson is working on developing his interests in portraiture, the representation of children in art, and the rrelationship between music, musicality, and the representation of musical instruments in art with a view to publishing his research. His teaching responsibilities are in Baroque, 18th and 19th-century European and American art, Asian art, and Women Artists.
