Blanche Lazzell: The Work of an American Modernist
September 9 through October 29, 2004
Curated by Robert Bridges
Blanche Lazzell was a pioneering American Modernist. Like other American avant-garde artists in the early years of the twentieth century, Lazzell sought out instruction from the important artists of her day in New York and Paris. On two extensive trips to Europe in the teens and again in the twenties, she adopted the new approaches of fauvism and cubism. As an early practitioner of modernism in America, Lazzell created some of the first non-objective prints and paintings in this country. This extensive exhibition and catalog highlight some of Lazzell's most significant work created throughout her fifty year career.
From her white-line prints to her non-objective paintings of the 20's to her late abstractions, this exhibition represents the full scope of Lazzell's career and her role as a translator of the achievements of European modernism for her colleagues in America.
