Bob Anderson has headed the West Virginia University ceramic studios for 34 years. Bob earned his BFA and MFA from Alfred University and has established linkages with numerous ceramic programs in China; offering study and travel programs in China for over 13 years.

Shoji Satake
Faculty - West Virginia University

Shoji Satake, born in Kyoto, Japan and raised in Anchorage, Alaska received his BA in Studio Art and BA in Government from The College of William and Mary in 1996. He received his MFA in Ceramics from Indiana University, Bloomington in 2004. He is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art, 3-D Area Coordinator and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. In addition to teaching, Shoji currently serves as the Director-at-Large for the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Board of Directors. In 2004-2005, he taught as a visiting faculty at both Hope College in Holland, Michigan and Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

Shoji has conducted workshops and exhibited nationally and internationally. Some of his most recent activities include the USA/Japan Exhibition at Santa Fe Clay, the 2004 Summer Visiting Artist Workshop at the University of Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Jingdezhen, China 1000 years of Porcelain International Exhibition, “Yellow Ball Project”, Antwerp, Belgium, and the exhibition “From Hoosier Hands” at the Richmond Fine Arts Museum in Richmond, Indiana.

In 2002, Shoji first paricipated in the WVU Summer China Program. This experience was very pivotal to the current direction of his work. As he states, “WVU China Program offers a unique opportunity to work side by side with master artists and craftsman and to learn the secrets and sensibilities of thousands of years of their traditions and techniques. Anyone who appreciates ceramics will only benefit from the first hand experience that this program offers.”
