Graphic Design

The design area is inextricably linked to computer technology, but that in no way diminishes the need for a solid foundation in traditional skills, composition, typography, design history, photography and methods of researching and solving visual problems. Once the foundation is in place, things become exciting as solutions are packaged in complex forms such as book design, interactive multimedia projects, or the design and application of a symbol. To ensure that our students have optimum access to faculty and computer equipment, entrance into upper-level design studios is limited to the number of computer workstations we have in our lab. This selection is made at the end of the second semester of design classes by a jury of two design professionals, two seniors, and two faculty members.

Among the aspects of our program that make our graduates marketable are: the emphasis on the book as a format for sequential design; a semester-long senior project; and a course operating as a model design studio with its own identity and clients. Projects are taken through the printing process.

The senior project allows the student to develop a unique body of work that is packaged in exhibit, book, or interactive form. These emphases, along with an external internship program, help our students develop a sense of community, and professionalism. Our alumni work in studios in every major US city, six international cities, and have been acceped into the top graduate programs in the country.
